I find that the best way to get writing done is to set yourself deadlines. But you have to be motivated in order to keep at those deadlines. I write articles for a foodservice magazine, and I sometimes get a deadline of a week or so. Sometimes, working under pressure gives me my best work. I was the same when I was in school. But when you’re writing a novel and you have “all the time in the world” it gets difficult to keep to that deadline, especially when it’s YOU who’s giving it. I’ve learned that if I mark it in a calendar, that helps tremendously. I usually do not have such a busy life, but this year has been non-stop it seems. So I have not given myself a deadline to finish the 2nd book in my series. I’ve actually been slacking on it and sometimes when I hit a wall, I am afraid of it–like I can’t think of anything to write, therefore I must put it down. But if I actually read it and focus on it more, the words don’t stop…the ideas continue to flow.
So, to get myself in gear, I’ve decided to give myself until September 25, 2011 to finish this book. I am also writing two other stories simultaneously…as well as sending off query letters to my first novel, not associated with my fantasy series.
And so, the countdown begins.
